Enter to celebrate the Sixth Annual “What the Fluff” Festival in Union Square, Somerville
As Wikipedia defines it, Fluff is:
“Marshmallow creme is a very sweet, spreadable, marshmallow-like confection. Marshmallow creme and peanut butter are used to create a Fluffernutter sandwich…One popular brand of marshmallow creme, sold principally in the Northeastern United States, is Marshmallow Fluff.”
This year, on Saturday, September 24th, Union Square Main Streets will present the Sixth Annual “What the Fluff?” Festival in Union Square, Somerville to honor Archibald Query, who invented this delicious “fluffy” spread right here in Union Square in 1917. There will be food, games, entertainment, even a celebrity appearance by Susan Olsen, or ‘Cindy’ as many know her, from the Brady Bunch. And there’s still time to enter the Fluff cooking contest, which boasts some top prizes, including a tour of the factory (a rare treat)!
I’ve decided to get into the fun this year and I hope you will join me! To celebrate, Wicked Good Travel & Activities is having its first-ever giveaway contest…
The rules are simple:
- Leave a comment below telling everyone why you love Fluff – and be creative! 1 comment per person. If you have a twitter account tweet about it to @WickedGoodTravl and use the hashtag #FluffFest. Leave me a comment letting me know if you did!
- I’m looking for unique recipes, short prose (5 sentences or less), or poems, or those fun little things called haikus, and even vlogs (short videos, 5 min or less, that you’ve uploaded on YouTube- such as making a recipe or a video montage) all proclaiming your love for Fluff.
And the prizes are awesome:
- One lucky winner will get a free Fluff tote bag (pictured above).
- Another lucky winner will receive a gift certificate for 2 free studio class at The Training Room in Somerville, MA. What better way to work off all that fluff you’ll eat testing recipes and at the festival?
- All winners will be celebrated and featured on Wicked Good Travel & Activities, Somerville Patch, and Union Square Main Streets!

So, I really have only used marshmallow fluff for two things. However, I have a couple more ideas to try in the future!
1) Marshmallow fluff as a base for marshmallow fondant….gives fondant a creamy marshmallowy flavor instead of a play-doh taste!
2) Fudge, of course!!! I have a killer fudge recipe, which of course I can’t find!!!
So, now for my untested ideas for fluff!
S’mores! Ever have a craving for a s’more but you don’t have a campfire? Spread some fluff on a graham cracker slap on a piece of chocolate and top with the final cracker. And there you have an instant s’more! I really need to try this!
My other idea is for candy. I would like to make some marshmallow fluff fondant, mix in some walnuts, and dip the balls into melted chocolate! In my opinion these would make super duper rocky road candy balls!
All of this talk of fluff has totally inspired me to go buy some fluff and get baking/cooking!!! Mmmmm…..

Growing up Fluff was the magic ingredient. Add it to anything and it becomes a delicious treat. One of my favorites was adding fluff to a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
Unfortunately now whenever I think about Fluff I’m reminded of a college friend’s week long experimental diet. He was the kind of guy who’d do things just to get a reaction. I remember one time in the cafeteria he bit into a whole onion just to see the look on everyone elses faces as their eyes started to water.
Once he somehow got it into his head that Fluff was some kind of superfood and would provide him with all the nutrients he needed to sustain himself. He’d fill cups with it from the cafeteria and smuggle them back to his room.
I think the constant sugar-high made his delirious, because after a week he proudly proclaimed: “Hey guys, it’s working. I haven’t had to go to the bathroom in days.”
Unfortunately every sugar rush ends in a crash. Eventually he became sick enough to return to more nutritious foods like pizza, burritos and cheeseburgers.

Uses for Fluff:
Substitute for double-sided tape to keep side-boob from showing.
Bathtub finger-painting.
Toupee glue.
Emergency caulk.
Before leaving on vacation, spread patches of fluff throughout home on floor to trap thieves.
Shaving cream (not good for diabetics).
Blown-in wall insulation; may have to scoop-in.
Smear a little on ear buds to keep in place.
Thanks for all the great comments so far! You all are awesome
Okay, you asked for it, so I’m giving it to you – twice:
Marshmallow Divine
Sticky white goo all over
Sweet, thy name is Fluff
Mellow, sun-drenched marsh
Nourishing, digestive aid
Marshmallow Fluff – nope.
why fluff is awesome: my 5 year old niece has a peanut allergy and every time she goes to a friend’s house the kids are always eating pb&j’s. my sister in law started sending her with pb&fluff sandwiches and all the little kids wanted to know what the yummy marshmallow stuff was. now at every play date she goes to, the moms make pb&fluff cuz the kids love it so much.
Fluff–making kids with peanut allergies cool since 1917 in Union Square
I finally tried Fluff for the first time! Had myself a fluffernutter. Not only was it tasty, but I have without a doubt just enjoyed the least appropriate snack possible to accompany writing the climax to a psychological horror story.
Future interviewer: “How do you get yourself in the right mindset for writing horror?”
Me: “Marshmallows.”

My number one use for Fluff is a fluffernutter sandwich, which sometimes evolve into a fluff-almond butter or fluff-Nutella sandwich
Hi, neat to meet you today! Fluff! I’ve have 2 connections to it. 1) Rice crispy treats that my late grandmother-in-law used to make. 2) Love to spread it on graham crackers- when we don’t have a bonfire for s’mores!! I’m looking forward to the festival, hopefully I’ll finally make it to Union Square!
Fluff, fluff, fluff, fluff, fluff
Gooooooey, Sweeeeet, and Mouth Sticky
I need some right NOW!
There once was a food named Fluff
Made with all the right stuff
From Somerville born
I feel I must warn
You know you just can’t get Enuff
Fluff: the stuff of dreams.
Made in my hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Always there for a large spoonful straight out of the jar,
or the sweet surprise on a peanut butter sandwich.
It’s more dependable than a man,
and as loyal as a friend.
Fluff equals love. Always have, always will!

PS – I don’t talk like this in real life; I just really love Fluff =)

Oops,
Fluff you know I just can’t get enough, of your marshmallow comfort. Peanut Butter and Jelly, can’t compete with your sweet and sticky goodness. Your nostalgic power brings me back to a simpler time, yet fluff can go on cupcakes, brownies, ice cream, oh my!
