Being a native Californian, I LOVE my Mexican food. I would be incomplete without it. The six months I lived in London, I seriously contemplated having some freeze-dried and shipped to me. And I don’t just love any Mexican food, it has to be good Mexican food. No Tex-Mex for me please.
So, upon arriving in Boston 10 years ago literally one of the first things I did was start seeking out a Mexican restaurant. I never did find anything in the downtown area where I was living. It wasn’t until I came to the Somerville area that I found my long lost East Coast Mexican restaurant soul mate.
Right in the heart of Union Square Somerville there is a little place called Cantina La Mexicana. When I first began frequenting there nearly 8 years ago they had just a tiny room with a handful of tables to eat-in and take out. Once I had a taste of their flautas, tamales and the true test- the beans and rice- I was in food heaven. I’m not exaggerating when I say I was averaging a trip or take out from there once a week. Then when I figured out they catered I ordered platters full of tamales, tacos and more for many a party. Eventually they took over the space next door and set up a gorgeous eat-in area. The eat-in menu is a bit fancier than the takeout, and you can get awesome Sangria, regular or pear-flavored. They also have a variety of margaritas when you eat-in. Of course if you want some basic down-home Mexican-style cooking like my staple the Taco Plate, or a Burrito (or Burro as they call it) stuffed with meat, rice, beans, and more, then go for the take out option. I love both going there and getting take out and although I’ve cut back from the average once-a-week, which my jeans are thankful for, I still need my fix regularly.
So, if you’re ever in the mood for some Mexican food that is downright authentic, yummy, and inexpensive come check this place out! Of course if you have the good fortune of living nearby I would definitely pick up the phone and order from the take out menu as well (be ware they don’t deliver, but it’s totally worth the drive/walk)!
Salud!
